Are you in business? – The PPSR guide one year later

A year ago I was pleased to launch the PPSR business guide – for you and your accountant. One year on, and I would like to acknowledge how important this guide has been to help raise awareness of the PPSR both at home and abroad.

Stakeholder feedback and engagement have been key drivers in the development and distribution of this practical resource for the small business community.

This guide was created based on feedback from a number of sources, including submissions by industry to the statutory review of the PPS Act and our PPS stakeholder forums.

It came together through collaboration with industry associations, small business and other PPSR practitioners, such as accountants and lawyers. I’m happy to say that the guide has proven to be a helpful resource for small businesses and their advisors.

The guide, titled Are you in business? is a relatively large booklet, split into coloured sections of …

  •     is this relevant to me

  •     how do I use it

  •     some basic case studies

  •     the technical info (for accountants and financial staff/advisors).

Since launching the guide, we’ve averaged about 9,000 downloads a month – an encouraging figure which shows that we’re connecting with the small business sector.

The guide is available via download at the Resources page on the PPSR website. To order printed copies of the booklet email

This guide is intended to target those businesses selling or hiring out on terms. AFSA recognises the vital role that PPSR business advisers, such as accountants, lawyers, government funded business advisories play in getting information on the benefits of the PPSR to Australian businesses – which is exactly where it needs to be.

AFSA is committed to collaborating with stakeholders to make sure that we continue to provide the right people with the right information at the right time – and we look forward to having more people know about how the PPSR can help their business.

On a macro-level – and for those interested in Australian international standing in this area – the guide has received international recognition, and been instrumental in AFSA being the recipient of a merit award from the International Association of Commercial Administrators.

Continuing on an international note, I am about to embark on a leave of absence during which I will take up an appointment with the International Finance Corporation (IFC), World Bank Group.  The IFC continues to play a crucial role in profiling the many benefits of secured transaction systems to developing economies across the globe.

I am pleased to announce that Peter Edwards will be acting Registrar during this time.

Thank you for your continued support and I look forward to staying in touch in the New Year.

Season’s Greetings

Gavin McCosker
Chief Operating Officer and Registrar of Personal Property Securities
