Collateral type - commercial and consumer property

When you register security interests on the PPSR, you must choose the collateral type. Collateral type is either commercial or consumer, it cannot be both.

The options you see differ according to collateral type selected.

Once you have created a registration, the collateral type cannot be amended.

Commercial property

Commercial property is personal property that is held in the course or furtherance, to any degree, of carrying on an enterprise or business to which an ABN has been allocated. This includes property held by an individual with an ABN that is used for business purposes.

Consumer property

Consumer property is personal property held by an individual for private use only.

A registration against collateral that is consumer property cannot be for more than 7 years and if it is serial- numbered then the registration may not identify the grantor at all.
