The used car market is booming across Australia, but it’s important to be aware of the risks when buying a second-hand vehicle privately. If you or someone you know is in the market for a car, don’t forget to complete a $2 quick motor vehicle search on the PPSR.
A $2 PPSR search can help you determine if the vehicle is:
- debt free and safe from possible repossession by a bank or financier
- reported as stolen or written off; or
- subject to the Takata airbag recall.
Knowing if a car has been reported written-off is particularly important in areas which have been impacted by natural disasters – such as the floods and hailstorms which have recently hit eastern Australia. Natural disaster damage can cause a car to be classed as a repairable write-off.
Repairable write-offs can cause problems – not only in terms of the value of the car, but because some states won’t allow registration of a written-off vehicle. Additionally, some insurers will not fully cover repairable write-offs.
