What we learned at the COSBOA summit

AFSA recently attended the COSBOA National Small Business Summit, speaking with small business owners and industry representatives. Key themes included simplifying regulation, compliance and the future of AI – all relevant to how small businesses interact with government and use services like the PPSR.
Some attendees knew the PPSR well, while others were learning about it for the first time. This highlighted the importance of ongoing outreach and education, especially in industries with less exposure to the PPSR.
A standout conversation was with the Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMS), Australia’s largest professional association for natural health practitioners.
We discussed how PPSR education and resources could better support their members – many of whom are women-owned small businesses – in navigating financial risk and protecting their assets.
We shared our new small business page and invited feedback to help us tailor future content and tools. These insights and conversations are shaping how we communicate the value of the PPSR across diverse sectors.

More than 113,000 hospitality and accommodation businesses are currently listed as grantors – showing how widely the PPSR is used across industries.
Why keeping your PPSR records up to date matters

AFSA's Regulatory Action Statement for 2025–26 highlights the importance of maintaining the integrity of PPSR.
A key focus area is the failure to remove expired registrations, which can:
- disrupt credit access
- delay financial transactions
- create confusion for businesses and lenders.
Old or incorrect PPSR entries are especially challenging for small businesses needing fast finance or asset transfers.
AFSA is investing in education and engagement to help users understand their responsibilities under PPSR legislation, including:

Case study: a delayed loan due to an old registration
A small transport business applied for a loan to upgrade its fleet. A PPSR search revealed a security interest on the vehicle – even though the loan had been repaid years earlier. The outdated registration caused delays in the approval process and required the business to provide additional documentation to have the registration removed via the amendment demand process.
This case shows why keeping PPSR registrations up to date is essential. It protects your business’s reputation, ensures smoother financial transactions and supports a reliable credit system.
You can learn more about ending a registration on the PPSR website.
What can you do?
- Make health checks a part of your routine.
- Use the free PPSR report PPS Registrations with Tokens for a Secured Party Group to check your current registrations and the tokens you need to discharge.
- Share the free PPSR report instruction link with your lending teams to run as part of their regular reconciliations.
