Small business roundtable: Maintaining connections during COVID-19

We regularly consult with small business representatives to discuss how AFSA can support their use of the PPSR – through resources, advocacy and more.

It was our pleasure to host another small business roundtable in March 2020 – a yearly sector event where we meet with representatives from a range of public and private organisations about the challenges posed to small business. This year we focussed on impacts caused by major events like the bushfire crisis and COVID-19.

Participants agreed key themes from earlier discussions remain relevant and include low awareness of the PPSR, concerns about its complexity, and a lack of support for small business. The forum highlighted opportunities such as new and improved resources, and new audiences to reach out to.

We’re pleased to say that our work on the projects discussed in this forum is well underway. Our efforts have been focused on the issues most relevant to the challenges presented by the COVID-19 crisis – and we’re hoping to release new resources specific to small business in the coming weeks for further consultation.

The minutes from our last meeting are available now:

We’d like to acknowledge the ongoing participation and support for this initiative from small business champions, advocates and industry representation from the Australian Finance Industry Association (AFIA), Australian Institute of Credit Management (AICM), Australian Restructuring Insolvency & Turnaround Association (ARITA), Australian Small Business and Family Enterprise Ombudsman (ASBFEO), Chartered Accountants Australia New Zealand (CAANZ), Commercial & Asset Finance Brokers Association of Australia (CAFBA), Council of Small Business Organisations Australia (COSBOA), Hire and Rental Industry Association (HRIA), the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) and information brokers.

We look forward to further opportunities to collaborate with our small business advisors and provide support as we all navigate the challenges of COVID-19.
